| Tackling Learning Measurement |
 |
Measuring the value and impact of learning programs and investments is an ongoing challenge. While more than 85% of all organizations measure training enrollments, less than one-half measure actual training hours by employee and only 35% measure true completion on a regular basis. Social and informal learning have only increased the complexity, and the demands for justification have certainly intensified. But, learning measurement doesn’t have to be a recurring headache. Any learning organization – no matter its size or budget – can put together a successful and practical strategy.
If you’re looking for an intensive introduction to our approach, come to our complimentary seminar, Innovation in Learning Measurement: High-Impact Measurement Model, Tuesday, August 10, in Washington, DC. You’ll get a detailed overview of our High-Impact Measurement Framework, a business-based approach to learning metrics, and a demonstration of a unique technology solution to assist in its implementation. The foundation for Josh Bersin’s The Training Measurement Book, the framework has been adopted by hundreds of companies seeking a practical, scalable approach to validating investments, measuring the efficiency and effectiveness of learning initiatives, and communicating value to business leaders.
If you can’t make the seminar, tune into Metrics for the Modern CLO, a complimentary recording of Chief Learning Officer magazine’s webinar hosted by Josh Bersin. You’ll hear a discussion of measurement strategies, new tools to facilitate measurement, and the metrics that matter most to your business.
Our library contains many resources for members on learning measurement, including the research bulletin, Training Measures That Matter, which looks at methods training organizations use to assess their efficiency and effectiveness – from simple to sophisticated, and the 2010 Corporate Learning Factbook, an invaluable resource for helping you determine metrics to assess the current state of your organization versus overall industry averages and vertical-specific data.
Our advisory services team also offers customized and confidential benchmarking services exclusively for Bersin & Associates research members. These engagements can span broad areas or can be focused on specific areas of interest, such as organization and governance, budgets, and learning programs. Speak Your Mind on Talent Management Systems |
 |
Bersin & Associates is conducting a major, objective research initiative designed to shed light on customers’ experiences with talent management systems. This unique survey is applicable to purchased or hosted applications that include at least two talent-related modules. So, for example, if your company currently is using an LMS with modules for performance management and succession management, the survey would be applicable to you and your colleagues.
We invite system users at all levels – from those with hands-on, daily use to those responsible for IT support to those with budget responsibility – to participate in a brief online survey. We want to collect feedback from companies of all sizes and at all stages of implementation. The short survey, which will be live through August 6, covers these areas: Business relationships, product quality, service, client support, and implementation. You have the opportunity to evaluate multiple systems.
Findings will be unveiled in the presentation, Talent Management System Vendors: Leaders and Laggards in Customer Satisfaction at the HR Technology Conference on September 30, in Chicago. Talent Management Systems Customer Experience 2011, the detailed research study, is planned for publication in late fourth quarter. The goal with this objective study is to provide corporate buyers and users with critical information to guide purchasing decisions, implementation planning, and ongoing system use. The research will also provide unbiased feedback to vendors on strengths and areas for improvement.
Those completing the survey receive a complete copy of last year’s study, Talent Management Systems Customer Satisfaction 2010: A Comprehensive Study of Customer Experience with Talent Management Systems, along with a summary of the findings from this year’s survey when available. For more information on the talent management market, research members can attend our upcoming roundtable, Talent Management Systems: What Users Expect from Providers, on Thursday, July 29, at 2:00 p.m. ET.
Please take a few minutes to offer your opinions – and pass along the survey to other colleagues in your organization. In advance, we thank you for your help with this important, one-of-a-kind research initiative.

Winning Strategies from Learning Leaders
Josh Bersin
President
Chances are, you and others in your company are grappling with these challenges: developing the leadership pipeline, creating more successful on-boarding programs, improving employee retention. Our 2010 Learning Leaders have faced these same challenges and have implemented effective and efficient approaches that have resulted in significant business improvement. A new three-part webinar series highlights their best practices and offers you an opportunity to engage directly with the executives responsible.
Last week, we conducted the first webinar, focused on winning sales programs. Both speakers – Mary Ellen Buchheit, program manager at Cisco, and David Rubenstein, director of learning at Coldwell Banker Commercial – dove into the details and discussed the tools and technologies they use to drive program success, as well as best practices for developing measurement programs. Cisco’s programs led to an 85% reduction in channel training costs, and Coldwell Banker Commercial has increased sales transactions from new hires by 30% through the use of a blended training program. Both presentations were fantastic.
Don’t miss the next two webinars in this series:
- Learning Leaders in Executive Development: Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. ET – Join Kim Lamoureux, vice president of research, and speakers Larry Looker, manager of global leadership development at Amway, and Rita Buffington, senior director of learning at Qualcomm, for this exciting webinar. Attendees will learn how these world-class companies used multiple learning approaches and achieved diverse global participation and outstanding executive engagement.
- Learning Leaders in Organization and Governance: Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. ET – Stacey Harris, principal analyst, will host this webinar with speakers Aimee George-Leary, director of learning and development, Booz Allen Hamilton, and Sundar Nagarathnam, vice president of training, NetApp. Learn how these leading companies have optimized the structure of their learning functions to meet business needs.
Register for one or both of these webinars today. You can also read the profiles of all winners in the complementary report, Learning Leaders 2010: Lessons from the Best. I’m confident you’ll gain great insight from our Learning Leaders’ successes and come away with strategies and programs to put to use in your organization. And remember, the call for applications is now open for our 2011 Learning Leaders program.
