The How-To Manual for Modern Training Managers
Solution ProOur research shows a major disconnect in modern training. While most executives now realize greatest business impact and cost efficiencies come from new informal learning approaches, more than two-thirds of most training budgets continue to be directed to traditional formal programs. How do you transform your organization, educate business units, and build a learning culture in order to embrace and leverage the new world of informal learning?

Our newest study tells you how. High-Impact Learning Practices: An Operating Guide for the Modern Corporate Learning Function is a comprehensive resource for training managers and executives struggling with these challenges. The study covers these and many other topics:

  • The Modern Enterprise Learning Index, a set of 10 indicators of readiness.
  • Detailed discussion of the disciplines and skills required for success – such as performance consulting, knowledge management, community management, and information architecture.
  • The Enterprise Learning Framework, a graphical tool that illustrates how the elements of any learning initiative interrelate.
  • Application of the High-Impact Learning Measurement Framework to informal learning.
  • A special section on handling obstacles and minimizing risks associated with this transformation.

This 347-page study also includes case studies and examples from organizations such as AT&T, Best Buy, British Telecomm, Credit Suisse, EMC, Fidelity Investments, General Electric, Microsoft, and Symantec.

A summary and discussion of findings will be presented in the upcoming webinar, Learning Environments: The Next Generation of Learning Programs, scheduled for Thursday, August 13, at 2:00 p.m. ET.

Custom Dashboards at KeyBank Provide Sharper View on Learning
Impact Measurement Framework KeyBank, one of the nation’s largest bank-based financial services companies, faced a frustration shared by many companies – how to develop meaningful and efficient reports that provide up-to-the-minute information on all aspects of corporate learning, incorporate data from multiple sources, and display information in formats relevant to business leaders across the organization. So, when the company set out to select a new LMS solution, learning executives remembered Bersin & Associates’ research on the importance of LMS reporting functionality and decided to focus on this area in its evaluation process.

The recently published, 22-page case study, Learning Intelligence: KeyBank Gains Visibility into Learning Program Effectiveness with Customized LMS Dashboards, details the implementation of Learn.com and includes discussion on HRIS (PeopleSoft) integration, training activity dashboard examples, strategic dashboard examples, and lessons learned.

The custom dashboards give executives the ability to select data for specific periods of time, for specific business units (or enterprise-wide), and by various employee groups. Colorful maps, dials, bar charts and other graphics communicate information quickly and easily. So, for instance, managers can see at a glance the training in progress, what regions are on schedule, what regions are falling behind, and how projects are corresponding to rollout schedules.

In addition to providing business leaders with new and detailed learning information, the dashboards are offering the opportunity for training executives to engage in conversations to explain its significance and discuss potential actions to take.

Attention Corporate Training Departments: The World Has Changed!

David Mallon
Senior Analyst

Our research verifies what we’ve been writing about for the last year: The world of informal learning is here. But, we’re finding that many managers and executives are grappling with how to adopt and leverage these new approaches.

Fears and misconceptions. Lack of skills. Technology uncertainties. Cultural barriers. These are just a few of the obstacles many face.

We’ve just completed the industry’s first “how-to” guide for this brave, new world – High-Impact Learning Practices: An Operating Guide to the Modern Enterprise Learning Function. At the heart of this study is a simple, yet powerful tool to gauge readiness for the transition. The Modern Enterprise Learning Index (MELI), is comprised of 10 high-level learning function measures:

Internal: Capacity building, business analysis, content efficiency, adaptation, versatility.

External: Business driven, talent linked, timely, targeted, proximal

The index is based on an overarching philosophy: the modern high-impact learning organization should be an enabler of learning – not just source. In this study, we show you how to use these 10 dashboard indicators to adopt and implement this philosophy. We also provide benchmarking data to compare your progress with that of hundreds of other companies.

It is a critical time for enterprise learning. On one hand, there is a real risk of falling into irrelevancy. But on the other, we see extraordinary potential for true business impact. The very purpose of corporate training is changing and is forcing a dramatic transformation of the perspectives, processes, and approaches taken by learning professionals. Will you and your organization be ready?

We welcome your comments and thoughts on this topic; please email info@bersin.com to share.
